BOND 2016 - Technology & Aging Facility Projects

Bond 2016 Technology and Aging Facility Projects

Technology is an essential instructional tool that enriches the educational experience in the classroom. Technology enhances the outstanding programs in the Olathe Public Schools by improving learning opportunities and providing students with the skills they need for the future. Currently, the district uses a variety of forms of media in classrooms including desktops, laptops, tablets and digital classroom tools. The district’s goal is to provide great student access to technology to better prepare students for the global world.

This bond would provide the district with the ability to replace and upgrade student devices, upgrade audio/visual equipment in classrooms districtwide, upgrade telecommunications, maintain support applications, provide technology to support new construction projects, continue the district’s device foundation, and upgrade infrastructure and network hardware.

The bond election would help the district make vital improvements to facilities in order to take care of that which it has been entrusted.  Some of these important improvements include upgrading and replacing aged HVAC systems, taking care of exterior needs including masonry and replacement of aged windows and doors, replacing aged lighting fixtures, ceilings, and improving specialized instructional space.

Bond 2016 - Safety & Security Projects

Bond 2016 Safety and Security Projects

The safety and security of students and staff in the Olathe Public Schools is vital to the success of the district. To ensure additional safety and security of the district’s schools, a portion of this proposed bond would support school safety enhancements across the district.

While numerous large-scale security projects have been completed in recent years, the district needs to put the finishing touches on the security of its buildings. The proposed security projects include upgrading the district’s keyless entry, interior and exterior camera replacements and upgrades, front door audio/visual equipment and door access control systems for the high schools, and door hardware throughout the district. The proposed safety projects include resilient gym floorings for all elementary schools.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is a priority in the Olathe Public Schools,” Superintendent Marlin Berry said. “Completing necessary improvements to our security systems at all school, upgrading keyless entries and camera systems are an important part of our efforts to keep students and staff safe.”

Bond 2016

Bond 2016 Projects Design to Help District Handle Growth

The Olathe Public Schools has grown in enrollment every year since it was unified in 1965 and that growth is expected to continue. With nearly 30,000 students, the Olathe Public Schools is the largest district in the Kansas City metropolitan area and is the second largest district in the state of Kansas.

District staff regularly monitor enrollment, looking for trends and large areas of growth. One area that staff have been watching closely is growth in the northwest portion of the district. Mission Trail Middle School currently has 800 students and is expected to grow by nearly 300 more students in the next five years and continue to grow in a building that is already near capacity. Within the next 10 years, Mission Trail is expected to increase to nearly 1,400 students. Prairie Trail Middle School has about 850 students and will grow by approximately 130 in the next five years.

The proposed Bond 2016 projects include the land and construction of an additional middle school and money to renovate Millcreek Learning Center to accommodate growth at the Prairie Learning Center.
